1517 Fund is looking for a community & talent operative to join our team. The community and talent operative works with our community and our portfolio companies to make magic happen. This person will be in charge of maintaining and growing our community engagement (i.e., mostly over Discord & Mobilize) as well as helping our portfolio companies get engaged with and, when appropriate, hire from our community.

This job takes a unique person. You’re somebody who both gets excited about the idea of making a community spread over several platforms run like a well-oiled machine and wants to try crazy strategies to get people engaged in the community, and excited about working with 1517.

The C&T operative is much like a saboteur who works in the crowded cafes at daylight and in the dark alleys at nightfall, getting to know her targets, convinces them to join her battle, and brings them into the fold. She’s on a mission to help agents in the field solve hard problems by getting the best people on their teams.

This position can start as a part-time job that transitions to full-time for the right candidate.

If that sounds exciting to you, keep reading.

You Should:

  • Love the idea of getting to meet new, interesting, talented students, recent grads, and early career professionals.
  • Get excited about working with a variety of different portfolio companies and founders to get to know their talent needs and pain points.
  • Have a knack for reading people. You’ll want to help us build and maintain relationships with university faculty, accelerator staff, and other strategic partners across the country.
  • Want to travel. The ideal candidate can travel easily to major talent hubs across the United States.
  • Be able to grok technical challenges. You don’t have to be a 10X engineer yourself, but it helps if you can speak intelligently about engineering challenges and frameworks. Some familiarity with technical domains is helpful. For example, if you’re working with a deep learning company, you should have a sense for the skills that would make a great engineer there versus an engineer at a consumer social app or a fintech company. If somebody tells you they are a Rust engineer, you should be able to pretty quickly identify the kind of company that could use their talents.
  • Be top-quartile in conscientiousness. This job requires a lot of identifying, filtering, and tracking talent. If you get excited about building out a personal CRM in Airtable or Google Sheets, you’d be a great candidate for this role.
  • Be top-quartile in openness. We’d love to give the right person some leash to try interesting experiments to grow the talent pipeline for our portfolio companies.

Bonus if:

  • You have ~2 years of experience working on the floor of a venture-backed startup.
  • You already have a good network of talented people on which to pull.
  • You like to write. We have a blog on the 1517 website to which we like to see team members contribute.
  • You are based in Texas, California, the Midwest, or the Northeast. These are the major clusters of talent at the moment and access to universities, incubators, and groups in these regions can be helpful.
  • You do not have an undergraduate degree.

You will:

  • Help maintain and grow the 1517 Community across all relevant platforms.
  • Work directly with portfolio companies to grow the top of their talent funnels.
  • Travel to different campuses, events, and talent hubs to meet people to identify for portfolio companies.
  • Be active in the 1517 Discord and other channels to identify and engage talent from the 1517 Community.
  • Work with the rest of the 1517 team at 1517 Events.
  • Build out or acquire the right talent tracking system for our community and portfolio companies.
  • Work with the 1517 executive assistant to keep the 1517 jobs board up to date and helpful.

In your first two weeks you’ll:

  • Get onboarded to our community platforms of Discord, Mobilize, and Facebook.
  • Work to get all platforms in-sync – help us continue to onboard community members to the 1517 Discord.
  • Start planning outreach and engagement with the Investment Team.

In your first two months you’ll:

  • Engage with the outside world at at least two events with the Investment Team.
  • Get a grasp of our 1517 Jobs board and work with the appropriate Partner to grow top-of-funnel talent opportunities for portfolio companies.
  • Start to contribute content to the 1517 library.

To apply, send an email to jobs@1517fund.com with a subject line directly relevant to this job posting. Tell us why you would be a perfect fit to go out there and raise an army of hackers, makers, subversive, and builders to grow the 1517 Community and Portfolio.
